When to go to the police academy?

I don’t know if this is how it works in other states, but my state you can sponsor yourself to go through the police academy before getting even applying for a law enforcement job.

If you sponsored yourself to the academy, and excel academically and show great aptitude in everything, could it help you to get hired?
In my state the academy is more like a certification program. You need the certification to be a cop, but completing the academy does not get you a job.

Putting yourself through shows dedication and fortitude and will put you above other applicants, assuming your background and education is comparable to theirs.

    Good luck.

Many academies are becoming to where the financial burden is on the student. Here’s the reason: Say a department hires a remarkable student, and agrees to pay their tuition. The student does well, and finishes top in their class. Then another department comes along and offers them better pay and more benefits than the original department. The department that paid got robbed of their officer AND their money. Because of this, departments tend to not pay tuition any more.

Good news is, people who finish in the top 5% of the class or so will get these better paying departments putting in bids for them! So really, it’s almost better to pay for it yourself, so you aren’t committed to a department from the beginning. Do your best, and you’ll get picked up by a top paying department, no need to worry about that!

I am currently enrolled in a law enforcement academy in Texas. Much like your state, you can go to private academies, get your peace officer certification, and not be hired. In Texas when you do this all of the finance is on you, however, you need an agency to sponsor you (not financially) to enter the academy.  You are in no way binded to work for that sponsor unless an agreement has been made or a contract is signed.  Alot of small departments are happy to help you get yourself going and only want whats best for you. You do need someone to carry your license though. If you don’t get hired somewhere your license may lapse.
