Can one with bad credit still be accepted in to a police academy?

I messed up my credit at a really young age. I wanted to attempt to test into a police academy. But I read somewhere that having bad credit lessens ones opportunities in being accepted. Can an individual with bad credit still become a cop ? Aren’t other factors weighed as well?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am hoping to test for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department before the summer is out. But I think I may not be able to become a cop because of dumbness on my part in my youth.

Going through the academy in the desert during the summer is crazy. But about your question, bad credit won’t exclude you from going.

It all depends on which department you are applying to. Most law agencies do require that you have good credit because from their point of view, the applicant may be a gambler or the temptation to steal money from arrested subjects maybe too easy leaving the department with some serious liability issues i.e. lawsuits. My advice to you is to go on the Internet and look at the various departments in your state. Good luck!!

If your credit was messed up when you were young but you have made great strides and shown responsibility since then, it will help you. If you have mountains of debt, getting hired will be in jeopardy. You need to get it in decent shape or you may not get the job. I would also contact all 3 credit reporting agencies and see what it on your credit report and repair what you can. Good luck!

You can call them and ask them. They’ll tell you straight up.

In my area (Pacific N.W.), its most important that you don’t have a demonstrated pattern of failure to fulfill obligations.

For example, BK followed by three years of credit on the mend by always paying on time is O-K. But two active collections with no previous delinquencies might not be (suprisingly, the FICO scores might be similar). They are looking to see if you know how to handle your finances now.

Bad credit may disqualify you from some agencies, but not all. Some don’t even check credit

I am the background investigator for my department. I factor credit into my decision, but even horrible credit doesn’t disqualify someone for me. Especially if they can explain it.

Hello first please understand each state is different, first at least here in TN and GA, you get hired by the police department, * they are the ones who decide if you get hired or not. and they just send you to the academy, if they don[t have thier own academy.

Some departments have strictor rules about credit history. but you will find some department.

If you have cleaned up your act, and what happened was a long time ago, then you have a chance.

They weigh all factors. Old bad credit may not be such a bad thing……. but they may question why you still have bad credit.

You could do what you can now to fix it a bit. Or be able to show that you are trying. Like get your credit report and get things that are over 7 years old off. If you have any minor little bills that you never paid…. pay them.

If you get bumped for any reason…. which could be slim…. join the military doing anything then you will have a serious plus on your record.

I will hereby talk from my personal experience.

if someone wants to get out of debt today it is pretty easy with a debt consolidation plan, however it may get a bit tricky at times, I suggest you get as much information as possible online on this first,
