I saw a documentary recently about a British man who emigrated to America and joined the police force there?

Part of his beat was through an Amish community and one of the things he said he found unusual about them was that none of their windows had curtains on them-not even the bedrooms-and sure enough the camers shots showed this to be true;so,do their houses have windowless rooms where they undress and bathe,or is it that domestic nudity is no big deal to them and that they’re not particularly bothered if their neighbours see them?
Also, since they’re human like everyone else, there must be some girls who fall pregnant without being married. What’s their reaction when this occurs, both from the girl’s own family and also from the community as a whole? Are they more condemnatory than ‘modern’ society’ or do they just accept it as something that ‘just happens’?

I think the whole Amish thing is just a front for some wild sex cult.
They don’t trick me for one second.

I am sure that they consider curtainless windows part of being plain, and they probably do their private activities in indoor rooms.

Very few girls get pregnant if they live with their families under close supervision and get married at a young age. I am sure that it happens, and the community would not shun the girl, but I imagine in most cases the discovery of pregnancy is followed by a very quick marriage.

It is unlikely that you would have a case where the girl declares that she is going to raise the child on her own.

Most Amish people DO have curtains, but that type of standard varies from one community to another. Some use window shades. I would guess that the docomentary was shot in a community with shades only, and all of the shades in that house were up.

Out-of-wedlock pregnancies are rare and create a scandal. This does not mean condemnation in a supercilious way, but there would be some repentance expected. The couple usually (but not always) quickly get married before the baby is born.

The strictest Amish groups use blinds instead of windows, because they feel that curtains are too fancy. Other groups do use curtain.

If an unmarried woman gets pregnant she has to repent her sins to the church (her sin being the disobeying of the sanctity of marriage by committing the acts of marriage being outside marriage). After that she will be forgiven and helped, and marry either a boyfriend or a widower.
