do a ride along with the local department -this will give you an opportunity to talk with the guys who already have a job. start bulking up increasing your aerobic activity.

Troopers deal with more patrolling the highways and crimes related to vehicles and drugs or things of that nature. City cops do more day to day work plus patrol. City cops suffer more boredom and get jaded quickly I would guess. Troopers can travel a little more and can deal with interstate activities and different types of incidents because they’re state, not city, law enforcement. Be a trooper!

The State Police Academy is one of the toughest, along with Chesterfield PD, from what I hear. State has better benefits and retirement probably, but some of the areas surrounding Richmond have better pay and comparable benefits- Henrico being the highest of those probably.

What you need to consider is what you really want to do. The troopers are a supplement force mostly. They mainly do traffic and drug interdiction and help local agencies. Of course, they do many other things as well.

Local handles more everday things- domestic, burglaries, robberies, etc… In the end, it depends on what area you really want to get into. Look at their website and talk to a recruiter. It may help you in making your decision.

Also, with any large agency, there is a great ability to specialize in something that really interests you. All overlap on a lot of duties, but the more people and the bigger the area the more an agency can offer very specific fields to its officers.
