It is a boot camp, except it is civilian , not military.

Different. You don’t get trained so harsh and so long. You also don’t get to shoot with cool M16’s and greanades…

No its different, you have to learn the laws your going to enforce and do lots of role play so they can assess how you react in different situations.

Police academy is a bit different but it is a physical and mental training to prepare you for things that you will come across and face as an officer.
Yes, you will be tased. Yes, you will be gased. You have one on one combat, as you would chase someone you were trying to apprehend.
If you are going or thinking of going…Good for you and Good Luck. :)

Depends on your location. Here in Oregon, the academy is more like college. You do PT, defensive tactics training, and so on. But there are no DS yelling at you. And you get most weekends off to go home.

a lot of it is very similar.a lot of it is academically different

It is recruit level training and it varies from state to state and agency by agency. Some academies are tougher than others. Some have nine to five training days and then you go home, some require the recruit to spend the entire week at the academy facilities. Every academy is quasi-military in nature. You’re expected to wear your training uniform properly and obey the orders of your instructors. Some include marching in group formations and other forms of drill. Both training programs are designed to instill discipline and self confidence in the trainees. The big differences come with the missions; police recruits are trained to investigate crimes and respond to complaints, soldiers are trained to fight wars. The longest training program in the US Military on the recruit level is the USMC at thirteen weeks. Our basic police recruit academy in KY is eighteen weeks. Both include plenty of running and developing self defense skills. Police training also includes vehicle emergency and pursuit training, something you don’t get in the military.

It is much different…the army does not teach you how to beat up minorities without spilling your coffee.

It all depends on what academy you go to? If you go through a college academy then most likely it will be more academically challenging than physically challenging. If you go through an academy through a police department, it will be academically tough, but the physical training will be much tougher.

Police academy’s are more relaxed back.

Some are, some aren’t. My academy was a piece of cake with nothing but classroom time. A friend of mine is going to another agency and his academy time is double what mine was plus LOTS of physical training.

I can’t wait to do it for the NYPD
