Is there a way you can find out the size of a cities police force?

Take a small town of about 5,000, what would the police force look like?

I think that for the most part it would be based on economics. Some small citied do not have an actual local police force and policed by sheriff’s departments. If you were looking to find out specifics for a particular community I would contact the sherriff’s department for the city and call them if you were concerned about having enough protection.

Well a city like New York City has 8,143,198 people. And it has a police force of 40,000, which is considered high. A town of 5,000 might have 25-40 police officers, if they have their own police force. Most small towns are covered by the Sheriff department or the State police.

The easiest way to get this information is to call the town mayor’s office. They always have that information at their fingertips. You can also get it by calling the business line of the police department, too (do NOT call 911 for this!).

That’s usually bragging rights for a city; just call the non-emergency number and ask- they’ll probably be happy to tell you.

That depends on the location of the town, and the budget of the city. I’ve seen town of less than 5000 with more than 20 officers and I’ve seen towns of less than 5000 with less than 6.
